Tourist Attractions in Chile
Here are some of our top tourist attractions in Chile
1. Santiago Capital City
Probably one of the most obvious tourist attractions in Chile. Santiago, the capital city of Chile, has a very European feel and is a great place to discover the delights of the Chilean people. As with most big cities, you can enjoy eating at some great restaurants, partying in some buzzing night clubs, especially in the party areas and exploring the fine architecture that this city has to offer.
2. Vina del Mar
Vina del Mar is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Chile. It is only about an hour's bus ride away from Santiago and is a great place to go for a day trip. It is located on the coast and has a much smaller feel to the place in comparison. Visit the famous flower clock and take a nice stroll along the beach.
3. Skiing in Chile
Skiing in Chile is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Chile and drags in both Chilean's and tourists every year. You can really tell when ski season is about to hit, and I had the unfortunate pleasure of being caught up in the Ski traffic en route out of Santiago.
The great nightlife and incredible ski slopes in the Alps makes Chile a very popular choice for skiers.
4. Sandboarding in the North
This is one of the most fun tourist attractions in Chile. The massive dunes found through the desert region of Chile have meant that adrenaline seekers have began sandboarding down these massive mounds. Valle de la Muerta is probably becoming the most famous place to do this sport and can be reached from tour agencies in San Pedro de Atacama. This is great fun and the opportunity to have a go during sunset can be breathtaking.
5. The Atacama Desert Tour
Take an Atacama desert tour and see some of the most beautiful views of your life. You will find yourself gazing out in the distance for an age. The Atacama is the driest desert in the World so you will see some pretty incredible rock formations, valleys and lagoons. Once again, San Pedro de Atacama is probably the best place to get started on this tour in the very north–east of Chile. In fact, you will get very close to the Bolivian border throughout the tour, and it can be linked with crossing the border and enjoying the spectacle of the Bolivian Salt Flats.
6. The Lake District
Chile is renowned for its natural beauty in the south. The snow-capped Andes and the sparkling lakes will make your travel buds tingle! Torres Del Plaine is the most famous National Park in Chile and is found in this region. You can get in the park via Puero Natales on the Chilean side.
The National Park spans approximately 181,000 hectares. There are an abundance of paths to walk along and in some areas there are roads for a limited number of cars to use. You can do all sorts of activities here like horse riding, sailing, kayaking, fishing, trekking or climbing.
7. Easter Island
Easter Island is one of the most talked about tourist attractions in South America. Albeit, it may also be one of the most expensive! This tropical island is located right out in the middle of the South Pacific and is one of the most natural environments in the World. The fauna, wildlife and atmosphere is still relatively untouched and you can enjoy all sorts of activities like scuba diving, trekking, surfing, horse riding, cycling and much more. Don't forget to take a photo of the funny looking statues of men either!
8. Villarrica National Park
Villaricca National Park is a stunning landscape found high up in the Andes. It is blessed with natural features such as volcanoes, rivers, lagoons, lakes and forests. Within the park, the volcano Villaricca can be found. This is the most prominent feature and where the name derives from. You can do a lot of activities here like skiing, trekking, horse riding, climbing and volcano viewing! In fact, you can combine climbing with the volcanoes and climb up a crater to see the boiling lava inside!
9. El Tatio Geysers
El Tatio Geyser field is located in the north of Chile in the Atacama Desert. It spans a massive area and has over 80 geysers at an altitude of approximately 4200m. The geysers are an incredible spectacle and the feeling of the warm air all around is in complete contrast to all the other bitter cold places you would visit at this altitude.
It is the third largest geyser field in the World and is definitely worth a visit.
10. Lauca National Park
One of the great tourist attractions in Chile is this amazing national park found in the Andean region is Lauca National Park. This area contains some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the World. The sparkling lakes, flourishing fauna and the sight of snow capped mountains in the distance really do create a 'kodak moment'! There is also an incredible amount of animals and birds. Herds of llamas and alpacas roam the landscapes and flocks of birds fill the sky. It is also a good place for condor spotting.
You would normally reach this national park by beginning a 4 day tour from San Pedro de Atacama, or even coming from the other direction of Tupiza in Bolivia.
